Choosing the Right used RV

Buying a used RV

A good starting point for deciding the type of RV or motor home that’s best for you is to think about how you will be using it. While a Class B camper van can be fine for local weekend trips, you’ll want the spaciousness and amenities of a Class A or Class C motor home if you plan to travel extensively.

You should also consider the size of your family and circle of friends who may be traveling with you, as well as how much you can afford to spend. Class A motor homes can sleep up to six or eight people, but a Class B is designed for two. If you’re on a budget, a used RV is a great way to go, offering you substantial savings. It’s also a good idea to talk to people you know who have an RV about their personal recommendation they care to share, as well as any recommendations they may have.

Visiting RV shows and the dealerships of major RV and motor home manufacturers, such as  MONACO, Forest River, Jayco or Winnebago can also be enlightening, allowing you to get first-hand information about issues such as maintenance, power, fuel costs and maneuverability.

Once you’ve done your research, make a “pros and cons” list to help narrow down your ideal RV, based upon brand, features, floor plans and accessories.

You may also want to investigate the various types of amenities in the typical RV. Generally speaking, you can count on a bed, kitchen with sink, stove and a refrigerator. RVs also typically come equipped with a living area including couch, television, table and chairs, plus air conditioning and heating.

Equally important is making sure everything inside the used RV is in good working order. Start with the interior, checking for wear and tear on the furniture, or signs of leaks and damage. Plus, you’ll want to check for signs of leaks on walls and ceilings, and make sure all appliances, windows and bathroom facilities are in good condition. It’s also important to check condition of the roof and body for signs of cracking or rust, and to confirm all door locks and exterior lights are operating properly. Finally, take the RV for a test drive so you can get a sense of its power, handling and drivability.
